[olympiaworkers] Urgent appeal: Jailed woman trade union leader in Bangladesh

From: ericlee@labourstart.org
Date: Fri, January 21, 2011

It has now been more than five weeks since the illegal arrest of
Moshrefa Mishu, President of the Garment Workers Unity Forum in
Bangladesh (pictured).

There was no warrant for her arrest at the time that heavily-armed
plainclothes officers took her off to jail, where she remains - in
poor health and badly treated.

Her real crime was leading a protest campaign to demand the
implementation of the legal minimum wage.

I'd like to ask you to take a moment to send off an urgent message of
protest to the government of Bangladesh demanding her release.

Please click here to do so.

there.

And also please forward this message to your fellow union members -
let's mobilize thousands of trade unionists around the world to
demand Mishu's release now.

Thank you very much.

[olympiaworkers] Sacked for striking - Cambodian garment workers need our support

LabourStart
Where trade unionists start their day on the net.

Please take action today to support over 300 sacked Cambodian garment workers.

Those workers went on strike last September, asking for a wage increase that would ensure basic provisions such as sufficient nutrition and shelter.

Their employers reacted by sacking them.

Well known brands such as Gap, Zara and H&M source from a large number of the involved factories.

Please demand that these workers are allowed to return to work immediately, with compensation paid for the time they have been dismissed:

And if you want to know more about what daily life is actually like for garment workers in the developing world, there's an extraordinary book out by Chun Yu Wang, a 25-year-old woman, called "Chicken Feathers and Garlic Skin: Diary of a Chinese Garment Factory Girl on Saipan."

It's LabourStart's book of the month, and every copy you purchase helps support our campaigning activities.

Have a great weekend.
